It's Time to Buy New Fitness Gear

Sometimes things that are worn feel better, but sometimes things that are worn are not better for us. Tired sneakers and frayed parts can leave you vulnerable to pain and injury, says certified personal trainer Jessica Matthews, Continuing Coordinator for the American Council on Exercise.

The question of the day is whether or not it’s time to buy new fitness gear? Our Get Fit wellness coach suggests you replace your shoes every three to six months of regular walking and exercise or every 350 to 500 miles of running and walking.

Buy the proper shoes for your fitness activity. Companies sell aerobic, walking, running, cycling, cross training, and tennis shoes. Select the best fabrics for your indoor and outside fitness activities. Cotton blend is a good choice when exercising inside. These fabrics are lightweight, easy to care for, smooth and breathable. Buy outdoor fitness clothing that dries quickly and wicks moisture. Some cotton blends have wicking fabric, which means the fabric wicks the perspiration away from your body. Capilene and polypropylene are also popular moisture wicking fabrics

For outdoor exercising buy bright colored clothing so other people can see you. If you're riding a bike outdoors, be sure to buy a helmet, gloves and cycling shorts. Purchase accessories such as socks, hats and gloves that are comfortable. The socks should be snug but not tight. Cotton or cotton blends are good. Socks are important because they can offer extra cushioning in your shoes.
